Rochem Technical Services are proud to announce their support of the Vulcan to the Sky Appeal Trust. We are supporting the continued operation of the Vulcan with a new engine Compressor Wash System that has been designed & manufactured in our factory in Winchester, Hampshire.

This new wash system will help to keep the four Rolls Royce Olympus jet engines of this last ever flying Vulcan corrosion free, clean and efficient throughout its annual air show programme and in turn also help to extend the service life of major engine components.

Since the Vulcan flies mainly at relatively low heights during its air show sorties its engines can ingest airborne salts and other contaminants, some of which can settle on the compressor blades of the engines so it is important to have a simple and efficient compressor wash system that can be used to thoroughly clean the engines on a regular basis between air shows and during maintenance periods.

Rochem Technical Services has been a world leader for over 30 years in the design and supply of gas turbine and jet engine cleaning systems and chemicals and was delighted to assist the Vulcan team when asked to design and supply a new compressor wash system for this remarkable aircraft.

The most essential component of the new wash system is an atomising header which delivers pure water and/or a special Rolls Royce approved Rochem cleaning solution in highly atomised form into the intake of the Olympus jet engines when they are being turned on their starter motors.

The entire water washing and/or chemical cleaning process takes just two minutes but the wash procedure can be repeated a number of times if needed to ensure that the engine compressors – which are the heart of any jet engine or gas turbine – are spotlessly clean and efficient before each air show sortie.

Rochem is providing the entire wash system – including water and chemical solution tanks and the portable wash pump skid – at its cost to the Vulcan team together with ongoing supplies of cleaning chemical and technical support during the remaining operating life of this famous aircraft; and long may she fly with the continued generous support of the public who continue to be thrilled by her air show demonstration flights all over the country.

We are currently seeking an engineer, graduated in the past few years, who is keen to build an exciting, interesting and challenging career in technical sales and marketing of our systems, equipment and services to the industrial, marine and aviation gas turbine industries.

Our International Group is big enough to be a world leader in its field but small enough for every member of our team to be known to every other member by name.

Some technical sales experience since you graduated would be a distinct advantage as would competency in Spanish and a good basic knowledge of gas turbine technology. However, what is most important to us is that you have a sound technical education, are fluent in English, have a good personality, are a quick learner, enjoy the challenges of technical sales and marketing and prefer to be out in the field with your customers – most of the time – rather than be stuck in the office cubicle looking at a VDU.

Reporting directly to our Florida-based US VP of Sales and Marketing you will first be given a good grounding and training in all sales and marketing aspects of our products and services and will also receive ongoing technical training and support from our Houston-based Director of Engineering. When ready, you will then assume day to day responsibility to support and further expand sales to our already established customer base in one of the world’s largest gas turbine markets. And if you are a Spanish speaker there will also be opportunities to help with the support and further development of our sales and services in the South American markets and possibly other areas of the world.

This position would ideally suit someone who is already resident in Houston and is familiar with the oil and gas industry in Texas but we will also give consideration to qualified candidates who live elsewhere but are prepared to move to Houston after initial training.

RTS does not use off-the-shelf nozzles like its competitors because they are often totally unsuited to the requirements of on-line and/or off line compressor cleaning. Instead RTS has always designed and manufactured its own nozzle systems to precisely suit the variations of every engine type to which they are fitted.

New and unique RTS nozzle designs are currently the subject of patent applications and it is hoped to introduce them in early 2009 along with new wash skid designs which operate on a new, more efficient and effective philosophy for compressor cleaning.

Worldwide field experience has clearly demonstrated that axial flow compressor deterioration during operation accounts for the major portion of gas turbine related performance loss from the new and clean condition. Of the total gas turbine performance loss approximately 70% can usually be attributed to compressor deterioration due to blade fouling. Fouling of axial flow compressor blades is generally attributed to airborne particulate in the sub-micron to 10-micron size range and this will be the major source of fouling. Another possible source of compressor fouling is oil leakage from the compressor rotor inlet bearing. The chances are, therefore, that all gas turbine operators will be faced, at one time or another, with performance losses due to compressor fouling and consequently with the need to clean the compressor.

The gas fired SSE Keadby power plant, based in England operated 2 x General Electric (GE) Fs9FA gas turbines each generating 255.6 MW (iso), the combined total generation is 720 MW. Since the plant start-up, more than 10 years ago, gas turbine compressor cleaning has been performed using the standard wash system offering from GE for both online (fired) compressor washing and offline (on-crank) compressor washing. The online wash system has had limited use because of a partial ban by GE on online compressor cleaning due to potential compressor blade erosion and liberation as a result of poor online wash injection processes. Offline washing using the GE system has its own set of issues and in 2003 SSE issued a tender to implement improvements to the current wash system.

The GE offline wash system problems are as follows:

• Flooding of the exhaust duct resulting in premature damage and failure of the exhaust bellows.
• Flooding of the lower half fuel nozzle pig tails – 2 x 8 hours of labour time
• High volume of wash system waste fluid requiring local storage and disposal
• Wash delivery system very labour intensive and many components obselete

The prime objective of the SSE Keadby tender were to resolve the listed issues above while improving the overall washing efficiency of the system and utilise as much equipment as possible from the existing wash system.
